Graphic Storytelling with Isobelle Carmody

8 February 2025 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm AEST

Award winning Author Isobelle Carmody travels a lot and not just in a geographical sense. She has also travelled through many different genres while following the story road. She began to illustrate her own work twenty years into a career made of words and found there were new stories she could tell with a combination of words and images. She has worked with artists on graphic novels and while doing her PhD kept a journal in the form of a graphic novel. Her most recent project is the most ambitious she has taken yet and some of her new work will be published as a limited comic book series.

Drawing upon her work and research, she is offering a special two-hour workshop that will introduce those wanting to venture into the world of words and images to the many different ways words can be enhanced by images. Those attending will learn how to create images that work even if they (think they) can’t draw, and they will come away with a basic understanding of how a graphic novel works.

Some feedback from the workshop run at the Queensland Writers Centre.

Thanks again for doing this workshop with us, it has been super well-received by participants. I’ve included some feedback for you:
“A fantastic, detailed workshop covering inspiration & practical advice.”
“Being a complete novice to writing and art, I learned a lot about the process of how to set out a graphic novel.”
“A rich & deep plunge into everything that makes a wonderful graphic story.”
“I loved how hands-on this workshop was! I’m excited to see what I can do with my work now.”
